Weddings and Abuse

Last night was a fairly awful night. At 1:30 in the morning we were awoken by very loud banging and yelling. It turned out that two people in the apartment below us were having a bit of a fight. When I went into the living room to listen in on what was going on (it was happening at their patio doorway), we heard the unmistakable sounds of skin on skin fighting of some sort. For all I know it may have only been slapping, but it matters not what might have been. I called 911 anyway.

Domestic abuse is unfortunately not uncommon in the United StatesFive or ten minutes later the police were here, but apparently completely missing the guy who drove off extremely fast. They questioned the girl who said her grandma wasn’t home, that it wasn’t her place, that she wouldn’t let them in and that she wouldn’t press charges. In addition, she expressed her anger that the people upstairs shouldn’t have gotten involved. Well sorry for being a good citizen lady, but if you don’t want people to get involved in you getting the crap beat out of you, maybe you should take it somewhere more private than an apartment complex. Like say a lonely dark alley or something. The police didn’t do anything really about the issue, which I’m not really sure if they even could in this case. But at the very least the guy was gone and it was quiet once more which I suppose is good enough.

Not there really is a good time for this to happen, but it seemed particularly bad now as we are going to a wedding today. My roommate actually is IN the wedding, as a bridesmaid, and wanted to actually look like she had sleep. In fact, she purposely told the bride that she was coming home with the intent of getting a good night’s rest which seems sad considering that she didn’t sleep for 3 or 4 hours after the incident because she was so frightened by it.

The event was even more ironic given domestic abuses in marriages. I’m almost positive that the couple last night was not really married, but the majority of domestic abuses are from married couples. This in an odd way makes you wonder if this is going to happen to the happy couple in the near or distant future. An odd mix of what should normally be a joyous event, but how can you not think about this after the night we had?
