Disappointments of the Apartment

I talked about the good things of my apartment and so now I thought I would talk about a few of the bad things we discovered about my new apartment after we moved in.

1) I think the biggest disappointment that we found was that the kitchen is actually much smaller than it seems. I mean don’t get me wrong it is by far the largest kitchen we’ve had space-wise. However, cabinetry-wise it is not good. In fact we have had such a hard time figuring out where to put everything that we still have two or three boxes left with no idea what to do about them. The drawer space in particular seems really bad. We are left without any idea on what to do with knives, very slim room on mixing spoons and spatulas, and absolutely no place for kitchen things like pens, towels and so forth.

2) The vent for the heating/AC blowing right onto our porch makes our porch unusable during times where it may be on, and it is overly noisy. Further because everyone else’s is also pointing in towards the porch, we noticed that the floor above us drips on our heads where our chairs are currently sitting.

3) no place to put bird feeder. We actually didn’t think to look for this but because the ceilings are higher here, so are the floors above us and thus there isn’t a place to hang bird feeders from. We would need a ladder and a long string to hang it from the porch above us just to see it. And we would then worry during windy storms of it breaking. Yet we still want to hang it in hopes of attracting birds somehow so that the cats have something to watch periodically.

4) The brightness though it is an asset has also proven to be a detriment. because it is often too bright and also lets in too much heat in the side room during the afternoons. My roommate also complains that the light shining in her bedroom is too bright at night even with the shades closed for her to sleep.

5) The shelving in the closets is metal wires which are probably stronger and less costly for the apartment but it is difficult putting anything on them without them falling through. There also doesn’t seem to be quite enough. For instance our laundry room has a single shelf going across the shorter wall of the room which is nice for laundry things, but it would have been nice to get a second shelf going across the longer wall as well as a shelf in the storage room to help us keep things without cluttering up other locations.

We are going to Ikea in Chicago tomorrow in order to pick up some new furniture items for around the house. In addition, we are hoping to find some storage options to help both in the kitchen and around everywhere and will likely be looking for solutions to solve these issues and more. Sorry for the recent lack of posts but with the move and my ill health it has been difficult.
